![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() This will be the first article of this series regarding the solid waste management of the University of San Carlos. I have been observing the university and the students' throwing of waste habits and will upload the observations and results of the interviews I gathered. For now, let me introduce to you the university. The University of San Carlos is one of the leading universities in the Philippines. It is a Catholic Institution situated in Cebu City, Philippines. It has several campuses around the city and caters local and foreign students. Every campus has different baccalaureate programs offered. I am in the Downtown Campus (also known as Main Campus). It is precisely in the downtown area of Cebu City and so it has all the positive aspects of accessibility and mobility but it is also constrained with the limited area. Nevertheless, the space is maximized and courses offered in the campus are limited to those of business administration, economics, accountancy, political science and law. While the Downtown Campus is a small area, trees and other plants can be seen inside the school. A little green color doesn't harm. It, on the other hand, makes the place more liveable despite the transportation-related pollution in the area. My only concern about the plants is the suitability of which. Although the cleanliness in the facade are well-maintained, some plants are dying. I have to look closer if the maintenance personnel are watering the plants well. Another point of interest is the trash bins strategically located in almost every corner of the school. I will discuss this thoroughly in the succeeding posts. For now, it is safe to say that the university is making effort to segregate solid wastes. But I have to ask details how and where the wasted go.
As young environmentalists, I urge everyone to examine their own school and let us report the solid waste management of our school and offer suggestions and solutions to problems we shall discover in our investigation. Take a tour... |
