Radiation processing of food in India - Rajashree

by | 23-09-2013 02:21

We got the opportunity to  participate in one exhibition cum workshop at Science college , Jabalpur, MP, India  on  ?Splitting atoms for the progress and prosperity of the nation ? during 16th to 21st. Sep?13.  Myself along with brother  Shiba  have attended the program. The program was organized by  department of Atomic energy ,  Government of India  with  support  of local  Government college.

We  have  learned  many things  about  application of  atomic energy  in the  development of our country India.  Today I am trying to  share here the related information  of  Radiation processing  for the preservation of  food  .

Radiation process of food involves treatment of food items by ionizing radiation, mainly gamma rays. Gamma rays destroy or inactivate organisms and thereby extend the shelf life of certain foods and agricultural commodities.

Salient features of the Radiation technology

1.       Radiation processed foods remain close to fresh state in flavor, colour and texture.

2.       The process does not cause loss of nature juices.

3.       The technology is effective , clean and very safe.

In India major thrust given to set up of new radiation processing plants for medical, food related and allied products has shown  very encouraging results and considerable progress has been achieved in setting up of radiation processing plants in the private sector. So far 16 plants have been set up in the private sector.

Many such issues was discussed and shared by video recordings  . Late on have seen  that, the  most of the discussed points are clearly given in their website in question and answer  form  as given here for better understanding by  our green fiends.
