[November Thematic Report] ESS and recycling used batteries

by india radha | 29-11-2022 10:27

Naysayers of renewable energy often ask this question:

how do you provide heat, light, and other services when the sun doesn¡¯t shine and the wind doesn¡¯t blow? The answer lies in the implementation of effective Energy Storage Systems also known as ESS. one such system, the Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), is becoming a vital part of the sustainable energy movement. Used electric car batteries can be recycled at renewable energy plants they can also contribute to solving the question of energy storage. Solving two problems at once and enhancing the circular economy that aids energy transition.

When disused car batteries no longer function, they can be recycled but electric car batteries aren't the only components from products that can be adapted for energy storage once they reach the end of their life cycle. The blades at wind farms can also be used for energy storage systems. Wind farms are particularly complex, as the towers and blades in turbines are often made from carbon-intensive materials like steel and concrete.

These are just some of the techniques for energy storage that are being under development all around the world. Battery storage is the key to the energy transition and all of the systems described use recycled materials. These are excellent ways to lead the change towards a circular sustainable economy.
