![]() GREEN THE GENE AND E.Y.E.S CAMPAIGN AGAINST THE MLA ! The Modern Language Association creates essay-writing standards for educational institutes around the world. Thousands of schools use the MLA standard, however, it these standards promote the waste of paper. Rules such as -you must single-side when printing- or -you must double-space- contributes to the waste of about 1.2 billion sheets of paper, the equivalent of 12,422 trees... and that's an underestimate. Together with the Edison Youth Environmental Initiative (our partners in the USA), Green the Gene is protesting these environmentally fatal standards with a strong petition. The petition goes something like this : ____________________________________________________________ Dear Rosemary Feal, The Modern Language Association is a very powerful figure in creating standards for educational institutions around the world. The MLA standards are widely adopted and well respected, however, there is a rising concern that many of us find to be very important. There are a few MLA stndards in the seventh edition of the MLA Handbook which we feel need to be improved. Requiring double-spacing and single siding have been trademarks of the MLA style but it is time that we all look into the future and realize that the waste these standards cause are much worse that how they look when printed. These MLA rules contribute to the waste of approxiametly 1.2 billion sheets of paper, which is equivalent of 12,422 trees. If the MLA simply adopted new rules and stated them clearly in its next Handbook, all these trees would not have to be cut down... rules such as single spacing or 1.5 spacing rather than double spacing, or suggesting double-sided printing. Please consider the impact of your rules and change them in the 8th edition of the MLA Handbook. ____________________________________________________________ Please take a minute to ask the MLA to change their standards, so we can all live in a greener world. Go and and join us in our protest, and sign NOW : Remember to spread the word, and get us as many signatures as possible. EACH ONE MATTERS !
