An Island Filled with Nature

Last weekend our family went to Jangbongdo, an island located right next to Incheon International Airport located in the Yellow Sea. The island was relatively small with an airport nearby, and we could hear planes soaring right above us. However, I could discover stretches of mudflat, mountains, and even rice paddies on this small strip of land.

The island was not connected to the mainland, and we had to take a ferry at Yeongjongdo, the island that Incheon International Airport is located. For more detail, take a look at the map below. Anyways, the weather was sunny and we were greeted by a group of seagulls. A picture of them is below. After a few minutes, we stopped by at Shindo, another island between the two main islands. We could arrive at Jangbongdo after a few more minutes.

What surprised me was the fact that the beach was not a beach at all. The whole island was surrounded by mudflats. I had known that the seaside on the Yellow Sea was covered with mudflats, but had never imagined that islands would also be covered with them. And so it was quite an amazing sight, and I could observe various creatures that inhabit the mudflats. They were seagulls, clams, and crabs. I could also see a lot of people walking in the mudflat to catch clams.

Another surprise was that there was a mountain on this tiny island. We actually climbed the mountain the day after we arrived, and met a lot of hikers. It was ironic that hikers were riding a ferry and coming to an island to go to a mountain instead of the sea. The only bad thing was that airplanes kept soaring over us, and we had to cover our ears because of the noise. However, I could see a lot of wildflowers, and I took a picture of one of them. Overall, it was an unique experience to know that there were so many things on a tiny island.
