[November Theme Report] Pros and Cons of Lithium-ion Batteries

by Seoyoon Min | 28-11-2022 19:44

What is a lithium-ion battery? It is a type of rechargeable battery which uses the reversible reduction of lithium ions to store energy. The lithium-ion batteries can be recharged and used over and over again. Lithium-ion batteries are currently used in most portable consumer electronics such as cell phones and laptops because of their high energy per unit mass relative to other electrical energy storage systems.

The benefits of Lithium-ion batteries lie in their promise of increased efficiency and productivity. First, lithium-ion batteries don¡¯t require watering like lead-acid counterparts, nearly eliminating maintenance needs. Secondly, lithium-ion batteries charge significantly faster than their lead-acid counter parts and has longer run time, eliminating the need to charge at each shift. Third, they boast over twice the life of lead-acid batteries.

But these benefits don¡¯t mean it¡¯s without its downfalls. First, lithium-ion batteries cost 3 times more than their lead-acid counterparts on average. Secondly, current forklifts are not designed for lithium-ion batteries. Forklifts must often be modified to fit the new batteries. Third, despite their low maintenance, lithium-ion batteries still require periodic inspection of cables, terminals, etc.

With all of lithium-ion batteries unique advantages, come some disadvantages that should not be overlooked. While this particular battery technology is an optimal choice for many renewable energy applications, it is not the safest or cheapest battery on the market.
