Disaster Risk Reduction: Improving Livelihoods in the Himalayas

by | 23-08-2013 17:11

The Ecological Balance of the Himalayas is highly vulnerable to a variety of natural disasters mainly due to geo-tectonic instability, tpographic variability , inaccessibility as well as poor infrastructural development, subsistence economy and poverty.

Owing to geo-environmental constraints, subsistence agriculture has contributed as a main source of rural livelihood in the region. However, during the recent years , as a resultant of Climate Change, an increased severity and frequency of natural disasters has engulfed the region, having consequences that may possibly extend beyond the depletion of mountain resources.

It is therefore highly imperative to build capacity of local communities through evoking a holistic framework for sustainable livelihoods and model-specific action plans that are suited to the demographics of the Himalayas. this can be attained through diversification of opportunities and inculcating a sense of resilience amongst the masses, in additional to strengthening traditional knowledge alongside institutional management.

On a personal note, however, I feel it is equally significant to launch a global as well as a regional effort in collaboration with all relevant stakeholders to target the issues at  hand at grassroot levels and involve the local communities to mitigate the effects- thus, not only enhancing cooperation but also establishing a positive precedent for future generations: the Youth!
