Responsible Mining

by | 06-08-2013 12:09

Mining can be one of the leading sources of the toxic wastes. Improper disposal of mercury and other toxic metals is harmful to the environment and dangerous to us. Responsible mining should be strictly implemented. Mining companies should remember that protection of our ecosystem is important if we want to continue living in this planet. We must be conscious on our actions.

Toxic metals are dangerous for they tend to bioaccumulate. These compounds accumulate in living things when they are taken up and stored faster than they are broken down (metabolized) or excreted. Metals like lead and mercury from the mining site may flow to creeks and rivers. Hence, the impact of possible mercury pollution due to mining extends far beyond the site.

I am not against mining. I am against irresponsible mining.

Responsible mining is gaining attention among mining companies. This is an advocacy to change the old mining activity of just digging and profiting. This reforms the mining activity. It is also a slogan by some mining companies to promote operation acceptance in the community. This marketing strategy is effective as it shows that their companies are environmentally and/or socially sound.

We should also be thankful of mining for without it, we might not be able to enjoy technology. There might be no economic advancement in the world.

Still, we should not be complacent. We should not compromise our environment. Mining activities should be regulated to ensure compliance with existing laws on protection of the environment.
