Solar powered cooling hats for DUBAI workers

by Arushi Madan | 06-08-2013 13:41

In Dubai , street sweepers and rubbish collectors no longer have to endure the scorching heat as their uniform now consists of a solar powered cap that blows cool air on their face. More than 2,500 municipal workers received cooling hats recently.

The temperature in UAE can rise to as much as 50 degrees Celsius, so to relieve them from the heat, Dubai municipality has distributed the caps to more than 2,500 workers who have to work outdoors during peak hours. The aim is to reduce their stress and fatigue in the work.

The orange-coloured solar powered caps is part of Dubai municipality?s move to take care of the welfare of workers who help in making the city a clean and comfortable place to live in. The caps are high quality products and are expected  to last for a long time as they are not intended for single-use. Everybody from the waste management department are receiving them, except those who operate vehicles.

Equipped with two solar panels, the solar powered cap shields the sunshine and transmits the solar power to the fan?s power source.

This is the second initiative taken by a government department in Dubai to provide a comfortable environment for workers during the summer months, as the Department of Economic Development had distributed jackets equipped with fans in June. The jackets were distributed to all inspectors while carrying out their inspections and raids at various outdoor sites, which were introduced for the first time in the Middle East.  Two fans are allocated at the back, which pump air around the wearer and out through the neck and sleeve ends. The electrical parts can be removed for washing, and the only drawback is the balloon effect caused by the air flow.
