Carbon Storage and Sequestration

by | 06-08-2013 11:05

Carbon sequestration is the process of capturing and storing atmospheric carbon dioxide in long-term basis. The process may refer to several things. It can be the process of collecting and then depositing the carbon from the atmosphere in a reservoir. Sometimes, this is called carbon dioxide removal.

Another process can be done in heavy carbon dioxide emitters. Carbon dioxide from these industries is channeled to a special compartment, trapped there before being stored in an underground reservoir.

Atmosphere or deposited carbon may also be used in the natural biogeochemical cycling.

Carbon sequestration has been argued to mitigate or delay global warming and/or avoid climate change eventually. This process is introduced to slow carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gasses accumulation.

While carbon sequestration may be effective tool in preventing climate change, its implementation requires the cooperation of the governments around the world, the businesses and the non-government organizations. This solution will not be successful overnight. It will need money, time and effort.

If capitalists do not want to invest in this process, we still have another option. This option is, perhaps, the most basic but widely disregarded activity.

I am talking about planting trees. If we don't want to spend for this carbon sequestration, why not plant trees?
