the red color on your food may not come from what you think

by | 02-08-2013 07:14

Once I saw a news on Korean TV that United Nation's Food and Agriculture Organization mentioned that insects could be a big part of our diet in the future. Some New York restaurants are already putting insects on their menu. Recently I find out that without acknowledgement, I have already putting insects on my diet.

From the Yogurt to Starbuck's Strawberry Frappucinos, the red color on your food is not from where you think it is. The ingredient is called 'carmine', and it comes from the cochineal insects which are native to Mexico and South America. The insects live on cactus. To get the red dye, the insects are dried and crushed.

There has been a petition going on by vegetarian people to change the color source to fruits based one. Though I am not a vegetarian, I rather have my red colored strawberry yogurt from the plant based food source.
