FEU Partners with WWF-Philippines for Environmental Modules

by Bam Azores | 29-07-2013 22:30

Far Eastern University (FEU) in Manila and the World Wide Fund for Nature Philippines (WWF-Philippines) launched environmental seminars under National Service Training Program or NSTP, which is a required course in all colleges and universities.  In FEU alone there are about 15,000 freshmen and sophomore students who will participate in these seminars that will cover modules on impact of climate change and solutions, biodiversity conservation, water conservation, and solid waste management.

As we all know human beings are using up natural resources faster than they can be generated and humans release greenhouse gases that is too much for the atmosphere to absorb. So this is why FEU and WWF-Philippines are conducting the seminars that will teach their students about protecting the environment.

The modules help the students understand how they are connected to the environment and how every little thing they do can affect the protection of our natural resources.  This way they become part of the solution to the environmental problems.  They can help even in little things like unplugging their mobile devices when not in use or influencing their friends through positive posts in social media sites. The NSTP students learned about Water Footprinting so they can measure how much water they consume and learn to minimize wasting of water resources. They also learned about proper waste management and how improper disposal of waste ends blocking drainage systems and causes flooding.

FEU and WWF-Philippines and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources have also been partners in trying to increase the population of the endangered Tamaraw in the province of Mindoro. The tamaraw or Mindoro dwarf buffalo is a small, hoofed mammal endemic to the island of Mindoro. It is currently considered an endangered animal.
