Gadjah Wong Community (Indonesia)

by | 23-07-2013 16:43

Indonesia has huge middle income population that uses consumption to support their lifestyle. It causes garbage and rubbish volume to increase uncontrollabley. On the other hand, they don?t have the knowledge how to manage it, so that becomes a big problem. Usually, they throw away their garbage in the wrong place (such as river floodplain/river edge). This damages the river?s ecology.

Education has a very important role to solve this problem. The majority of middle income people are educated people who have graduated from high school or university. It indicates that there is of potential for middle income people to change their way of thinking to solve the garbage problem.

From those statement, arises an idea to establish an environmentally conscious community with a small-scale education project. This project has the !--object--ive to increase local  awarness of the importance of maintaining the ecosystem of the river free of trash impairment and uses education is a medium to create this change.

Gadjah Wong Community is project that organized by Biology Education students of State Islamic University of Yogykarta, Indonesia on collaboration with water forum@kalijogo. We concern about waste management (particularly household waste)  to protecting Gadjah Wong River as frestwater resource at once. We commenced this project in December 2012.

Hopefully this post can give you an information about our action in Indonesia.
