Overfishing occurs when fish and other marine species are caught at a rate faster than they can reproduce. Fish in the ocean are a finite resource. Overfishing is one of the biggest threats to the ocean environment. High demand for fish, along with more effective fishing techniques, has lead to many species of fish around the world being depleted, making them commercially extinct. The problem is also being faced in UAE.

Eight species of popular fish including the most popular Hamour, King Fish and Spangled Emperor  are on their way to extinction in UAE waters. It is believed that approximately 66% of UAE residents eat fish at least once a week, with Hamour being the most favorite choice. This has led to a decline in Hamour population by about 90%.

High demand for fish here, combined with loss of habitat due to pollution, coastal development and catching fish too young — before they can reproduce — have contributed to these species being depleted to alarming levels. Restaurants, supermarkets, consumers and fishermen need to understand the impact of overfishing in the UAE and on the environment.

Government is already taking steps to control the situation. But fish-eaters in UAE can also make a difference by choosing wisely, every time they make an order.
