![]() The Roads and transport Authority (RTA) in Dubai is planning to add 20 eco-friendly hybrid cars to it's fleet. They took this decision after conducting performance tests that showed that the electric and petrol-powered Toyota Camrys need less petrol than standard cars. It was also realised that Fuel efficiency improvement amounted to 33% and carbon dioxide emissions dropped by 33% by using these cars. A normal vehicle needs about 12.5 litres of petrol to cover 100km while the hybrid vehicle needs around 8.25 litres to travel the same distance. CO2 emissions of the normal vehicle are estimated as 182kg per day, whereas CO2 emissions generated by the hybrid vehicle measure about 121kg per day. Giving this information RTA announced that the purpose of operating hybrid vehicles was to continue the governments drive of introducing green vehicles for a cleaner environment.Taxi's are the most common and preferred means of public transport in UAE. Considering this, let us hope that this is just the first step towards reducing the carbon footprint of our local travel.
