[October Thematic Report] The Development of Renewable Energy in Indonesia

by Syahidah Charisa Nabila | 31-10-2022 15:47

Energy is one of the important factors in achieving sustainable development. The use of energy is intended as a form of human effort to be able to maintain their existence and be able to improve their welfare and prosperity. The world's energy sources have undergone several changes, from the beginning the majority use biomass such as firewood to meet their energy needs, turned into fossils such as coal, crude oil and natural gas which are triggered by the industrial revolution. Besides, the development of an increasingly rapid new era brings several problems, including energy resources. Energy resources are the result from natural formation processes that occur in nature in the short and long term. Energy resources can be divided into two types: renewable energy resources and non-renewable energy resources. A fundamental change from the dominance of fossil energy to renewable energy will have a significant impact on various aspects of life, such as environmental, social and economic conditions.

Energy has become part of the needs of society in any country, including Indonesia. As the largest country in Southeast Asia, Indonesia has the biggest number in terms of population, economy, energy use, and emissions. The development and implementation of renewable energy in Indonesia will significantly affect regional energy usage achievements in Southeast Asia. However, energy resource in Indonesia is still dominated by the use of fossil-based energy, especially oil and coal. Indonesia has become a fuel importing country, per year around 7 billion liters of diesel or about 30% of national needs. This increasing use of fossil energy will cause an increase in greenhouse gas emissions, so that the climate becomes unstable and increase the temperature of the earth and sea levels. Many researchers have proven that CO2 emissions have made a huge negative impact to climate change. Indonesia also has abundant potential renewable energy sources with a total of 437.4 gigawatts (GW). Of the potential amount, only about 2.5 percent has been utilized. This environmentally friendly energy source has the potential to be developed in energy trade to countries in the region. Therefore, the use of new an renewable energy should be the main concern of the Indonesian government. Not only as an effort to reduce the use of fossil energy, but also to realize green energy which is environmentally friendly.

One of the main priorities that must be implemented in building the acceleration of renewable energy in Indonesia is to conduct research and produce technology and innovations to encourage Indonesia to achieve energy sovereignty. Currently, the use of renewable energy in Indonesia to achieve the target of reducing net zero emissions is still relatively weak, but Indonesia actually has enormous potential for renewable energy. Starting from geothermal, solar, wind, including nuclear power. These potentials need to be encouraged in the future. Not only that, the implementation of renewable energy such as the construction of power plants does not have to be done on a large scale, but the important thing is that it can meet the needs of the community. The urgency of developing renewable energy as a form of supporting energy security is very important, considering that energy has a very important role for increasing economic activity and national security. Therefore, renewable energy resource management which includes the provision, utilization, and exploitation must be carried out in a fair, sustainable, optimal and integrated system. Given that the availability reserves of non-renewable energy resources are limited, it is necessary to carry out diversification of energy resources to ensure energy availability.
