[October Thematic Report] ENERGY GENERATION: FOSSIL FUELS

ENERGY GENERATION: FOSSIL FUELS
Fossil fuels are those that come from plant remains and other organisms that were buried millions of years ago due to natural phenomena, the action of organisms, and great cataclysms, under specific conditions of pressure and temperature.

Currently the most used are mineral coal, natural gas, and oil and their derivatives.
Fossil fuels, but especially oil, are the basis of the world economy and Western civilization. The massive use of fossil fuels as a source of energy began to skyrocket with the Industrial Revolution and, in turn, the population also began to grow exponentially. Currently, most of the energy used comes from the burning of fossil fuels and we know that they pollute a lot.

These fuels are a valuable resource because they are the largest source of energy used, but both the extraction of fossil fuels and their use have great detrimental effects on the environment. In addition, they are part of the non-renewable resources due to their high speed of extraction.

The use of fossil fuels and climate change are related, which is why it is important to ask. How are petroleum products released into the environment? What are the harms of fossil fuels?
To produce energy, all these fossil fuels undergo combustion, thus releasing gases such as benzopyrene, carbon dioxide, sulfur oxide, nitrogen oxide, and carbon monoxide. These gases are emitted into the atmosphere as a consequence:
  1. The greenhouse effect is enhanced.
  2. Acid rain.
  3. There is an increase in the average temperature of the planet (global warming).
  4. Melting ice caps and rising sea levels.
  5.  Increase in torrential rains.
  6. Increased frequency of hurricanes.

How can the impact of fossil fuels be solved?

Searching for alternatives to the use of fossil fuels is very important because in this way all the impacts that these are producing can be reduced. In addition, by reducing the use of oil, the question of when the world will run out of oil could be left aside, since it is something that worries the world and it is known that if it continues like this in a few years there will be no oil reserves left. enough to meet the demand.
It must be borne in mind that natural gas among all fossil fuels is the one that emits the least pollutants. However, alternative fuels to fossil fuels can be:
  1.  Ethanol from corn or other crops produces fewer greenhouse gas emissions.
  2. Biodiesel obtained from animal fats and vegetable oils produces fewer pollutants than those based on oil.
  3. In addition, another option for power generation is to opt for renewable resources and thus make use of solar, wind, or hydraulic energy
