[October Thematic Report - Energy Generation in Turkey]

by Hakan Ozdemir | 24-10-2022 08:35

Renewable energy has been a crucial matter for our world since the early years of civilization. Energy resources have been used for years, and a greener world will result from renewable energy usage. Due to its geographical position, Turkiye has an incredible potential to build different kinds of green energy resources. Wind, sunny areas, both surface and underwater beds.

Turkiye's most used green energy sources are hydroelectricity, geothermal energy, and solar energy. Although the sun and wind could supply plenty of energy in Turkiye, hydropower is averaging almost a fifth of the national electricity supply. Over half of the capacity is renewables, and it is estimated that over half of the generation could be from renewables by 2026. Still, Turkiye has invested less in solar and wind power than similar Mediterranean countries. Turkiye lacks a renewable energy plan beyond 2023, including transport, industry, heating, cooling, and electricity generation.

According to some of the energy scientists in Turkiye, a massive increase in solar power in the south and wind power in the west could meet the country's entire energy demand from renewable sources. Moreover, there are several more ideas and studies on it. Some studies support nuclear power to keep everything stable, but as expected, people and environmentalists are also concerned about the idea of nuclear power. One more crucial opportunity is geothermal power, which is already used for heating and solar water heating. It is obvious that Turkiye has more than enough opportunity to add more geothermal power plants.

According to Ember(*), to decarbonize the electrical sector and reduce import costs, Turkiye must increase the use of renewable energy at least twice as quickly.

The main idea is that Turkiye has a lot of opportunities to overcome these energy problems of our world and help other countries to build their renewable energy plants. However, there is one thing to be highlighted, citizens don¡¯t know what powerplants are. It¡¯s mostly because the government wasn't successful enough to make citizens understand what is happening. Early years of the green energy matter started to mention, there were protests about new energy resources. After a while, people started accepting it but still, it is a problem that government needs to address.

To sum up, Turkiye is already using green energy, but it needs to be faster to generate renewable energy and build plants in the future. The government needs to take this major consolidation idea under scrutiny and take action right away.
