![]() Who thought that the cartons that we use for keeping milk and juices could be recycled to provide school desks and benches for hundreds of children in India? Well, such an initiative was carried by Tetra Pak and TERI (The Energy And Resources Institute) recently. In this initiative, children from various schools across 6 cities in India and adults alike donated over 1,00,000 cartons which were recycled into school furniture for underprivileged kids. Cartons are made of paper board, polyethylene and aluminium and there is a special technique to recycle them. They are shredded and compressed under high heat and pressure with the help of a 'hot press' to make flat sheets called chipboards. Robert Swan, a famous environmentalist also joined Tetra Pak and TERI to promote the campaign at DLF Mall in Delhi. 50,000 cartons from Delhi alone were recycled. The picture shows Robert and some children sitting on the cartons that were recycled into desks. There are thousands of children in India who sit on the harsh and cold floor without even a roof to study. Used cartons are usually left rotting in landfills but when put to use, they not only help save the environment but also help these children study. I read about this in a newspaper and decided to share this achievement with you. We have been worrying about the environment and how people are polluting and ruining it but somewhere we have been making progress in helping it too. Earth is our only home after all. But I'm sure that we have been making an effort to save Earth and have been encouraging to do so and also that we will continue to do so in the future.
