![]() ![]() The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) is the United Nations agency responsible for the promotion of responsible, sustainable and universally accessible tourism. Zambia and Zimbabwe proposed to jointly host the 20th Session of the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) General Assembly in their two border towns, namely, Livingstone, and Victoria Falls, respectively. To this effect, a decision was passed that the two countries be awarded the right to jointly host the UNWTO General Assembly to be held in Livingstone and Victoria Falls Towns from 24th to 29th August, 2013. As the leading international organization in the field of tourism, UNWTO promotes tourism as a driver of economic growth, inclusive development and environmental sustainability and offers leadership and support to the sector in advancing knowledge and tourism policies worldwide. UNWTO generates market knowledge, promotes competitive and sustainable tourism policies and instruments, fosters tourism education and training, and works to make tourism an effective tool for development through technical assistance projects in over 100 countries around the world. UNWTO?s membership includes 155 countries, 6 Associate Members and over 400 Affiliate Members representing the private sector, educational institutions, tourism associations and local tourism authorities. The General Assembly is the supreme organ of the United Nations World Tourism Organisation. Its ordinary sessions, held every two years, are attended by delegates of the Full and Associate Members, as well as representatives from the Business Council. It is the most important meeting of senior tourism officials and high-level representatives of the private sector from all over the world. Zambia is working hard to prepare Livingstone, even as i write to you there are major developmental works happening such as construction of roads, rehabilitation of structures etc The government of Zambia is ensuring that this rare priviledge is made a success which will directly put Africa as the perfect tourist destination. I also believe the reason the Zambian govt picked on Livingstone its because one it shares borders with Zimbabwe and most of all Livingstone is home to some of Zambia's prestigious natural spectacles and wonders such as the Victoria Falls. The 19th UNWTO general assembly was held in Tunza Eco- gen's beloved city Seoul, South Korea our HQ, so this is really amazing for Zambia to have the opportunity to host such an important event. Well, we wish them grand success their deliberations! |
