Youth and Media for Sustainable Environment - with the South Asian Youth Environmental Network ! Initiated by SAYEN's Sub-regional Youth Advisor Arati Rana Magar from Nepal, this project aims at using ?infotainment?, an ongoing radio programme in Nepal as a medium between the volunteers of the programme and the people in the two districts- Bhaktapur and Gorkha, where the young volunteers will visit schools and take classes and sessions on environmental conservation, sustainability, etc. for school children from grades 6-10. These volunteers and students will also be interviewed, which will be aired on the radio specifically in rural areas including the two districts, thereby inspiring more such volunteers to come forward and participate. Arati simultaneously is also running a campaign called ?Plastic free zone?, which has been initiated by her to educate people about the negative impacts of plastic usage and how to decrease its usage. In its first phase the team has already been joined by a partner organization, The Nature Conservancy Nepal, who have also helped in finding good volunteers for the programme. Orientation and awareness programmes have been initiated and completed in over four villages, while the environmental interviews and informative programmes are also being regularly aired through a program called ?Sajha Chautari?, which has recently covered topics like climate change, rain water harvesting, etc. |
