Manila Bay Garbage Problem

by Bam Azores | 30-04-2013 19:26

Manila Bay in the Philippines is known for its beautiful sunsets. But recently it is becoming more known because of its huge garbage problem.  Specially during the rainy season, garbage and litter is washed into the bay.

The garbage in the bay water has to be cleared up quickly because if it is not done, the drainage pipes will clog and the flood waters in Manila will not recede.  When it rains tons of garbage is found floating along the seawall.  The Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) and the Manila government makes efforts to clear this quickly.  In one day alone they remove tons of garbage to fill more than 25 trucks from the baywalk area. And everytime they remove garbage, more replaces it.

MMDA just launched a new contest for students to submit their innovative engineering solutions to the garbage problem. I think this is a good idea to make the students put to use their creative ideas to help solve a major problem in the City.
