[October Free Report] Introducing renewable energy in Madagascar

by Barisoa Nancy Andriamiarimbola | 20-10-2022 19:41

This article is the continuation of my article about solar energy in Madagascar. Indeed, in this article, we will talk about wind energy in Madagascar and its advantage for our environment.

Wind energy does not contribute to climate change

Wind energy is an electrical energy obtained by harnessing the wind with windmills or wind turbines according to the google definition. It is a form of energy that does not rely on fossil fuels to power its turbines. Its energy production does not contribute to climate change by emitting greenhouse gases. Only during the manufacture and transport of the turbines, as well as during the installation process, does it indirectly emit greenhouse gases. It is incredible because it illuminates homes and businesses with an infinitely available energy.

Moreover, its use reduces our dependence on fossil fuels. Indeed, we will run out of them one day. Moreover, developing and investing in a technology that can only work with a limited resource is a terrible waste of human capital, private funds and taxpayers' money. It is therefore a long-term solution that this energy brings us and ensures the use for future generations.

Madagascar is aiming to close its energy gap and reduce carbon emissions by
promoting a major investment in large-scale wind turbines, the President of
Madagascar, Andry Rajoelina, has announced.
In addition, about 95 percent of households use firewood for cooking, resulting in
large-scale deforestation. These two factors have led the government to announce
the need for a major investment in wind power to meet the country's energy needs.

QMM President Ny Fanja Rakotomalala said, "This project is a key part of our 'sustainable mine' initiative, which aims to leave a lasting legacy for current and future generations, built independently of mining operations. In fact, Rio Tinto QIT Madagascar Minerals (QMM) and Crossboundary
Energy have laid the foundation stone for a 12MW wind power plant that will power
QMM's ilmenite mine operations at Fort Dauphin in southern Madagascar.
Wind power could work in some parts of Madagascar also, but it should be the last
option, as the country has great potential in hydroelectricity, followed by tidal power
or geothermal energy.

The project will also reduce QMM's annual carbon dioxide emissions by
approximately 26,000 tons and reduce its heavy fuel oil purchases by up
to 8,500 tons per year. So we are grateful to be contributing to the
protection of our environment.
