Earth hour in my hometown ,Kochi,India

by | 10-04-2013 17:42

It was great reading about the way in which Tunza eco generation ambassadors and members celebrated Earth hour around the world. Though I was on vacation during this time in India I did not miss the chance to celebrate Earth Hour in my hometown, Kochi, Kerala. It was indeed a memorable day celebrating Earth hour in India as Kochi is  one of the 17 cities in the world contesting for the Earth Hour City Challenge and it felt great to be a part of it

In India, only three cities, including Kochi, have qualified for the distinction. Low carbon development plans and renewable energy solutions are the two important factors in the contest The city has embarked on a sustainable solar energy-based  projects .Solar energy has been harnessed to power its airport – a first in India.

The Ernakulum  District Energy Conservation Forum organized and observed Earth Hour on a massive scale.  A walkathon titled 'Walk for Mother Earth' was organized, from Durbar Hall grounds from 5.30 pm to 6.30 pm. The walkathon took a circular route covering all the major junctions of the Ernakulum city to reach back at the Durbar grounds. We walked with placards which had messages reminding the public of the Earth hour. I pinned the Tunza eco generation logo on my T-shirt and on my friends T- shirts making the walkathon all the more colorful and fun. In spite of the sweltering summer heat I had a great time enjoying the walkathon through the busy streets of Ernakulum. The onlookers appreciated our efforts.

Thereafter there was a talk on the importance of saving energy by eminent personalities, Several prominent personalities, including ministers, judges, bureaucrats, and cine stars participated in the event. A pledge to conserve energy was taken at 8.30 pm in candle light

The event was inspiring and provided an opportunity for every individual, organization and government to be part of the solution for the global crisis. Back in U.A.E with a sense of fulfillment, I can say that no matter which part of the world you are during Earth hour, be a part of it and inspire others to do so.
