by | 11-04-2013 18:15

On Saturday (March 19th, 2013) me, James Hogg (The Coordinator of Surnergy Ltd in Rwanda), Claudien Nsabagasani (The Chairman of Arbeltine Rift Conservation Society in Rwanda), Goretti Manikuzwe( a Biodiversity officer at Rwanda Natural Resource Authority) and Bennit a friend of James, we have left Kigali Center at 8: 00 a.m to the Akagera River for Birding. Our Bird watching has taken 5 hours (from 8: 00 a.m to 1: 00 p.m). From the centre of Kigali city to Akagera river wetland (at the border of Kigali city and Bugesera district) there is a short travel of 20 minutes. Arrived at our birding site we have got out the car, put on boots, take binoculars, pens, booklet and we begun birding.

The wetland has been degraded after 1994 Tutsi genocide by a company who cultivates sugar cane but at the side we have conducted our bird watching sugar cane hve been removed and the place is in regeneration to the natural estate.

Akagera wetland is home for different biodiversity such hippopotamus we have even seen two hippopotamus on this day, crocodiles, amphibians, fish, papyrus, birds and etc. Some of biodiversities serve as food source of raw materials for crafting especially with papyrus to local population, and some are protected by the government like crocodiles.

Here are some birds species we have found there: Black-white Caucal, Common Stonechat, Swamp Flycatcher or Swamp Alseonax, Jackson's Widowbird, Hadada Ibis, Blue-headed Cordon Bleu, Araripe Manakin, Slender-billed Vulture, Yellow-fronted Canary, Great White Pelican, Grey Heron, Grey-capped Warbler, Red-chested Sunbird and Greater Black-backed Cisticola.

Birding in Rwanda is still at the beginning even if there are some national conservation organizations in parternship with Bird life internation like Association pour la conservation de la Nature au Rwanda and Arbeltin Rift Conservation Society. And Some few young conservationist get involved in birding . Birding is still not common. I invite you all to come and see the beauty of Rwanda especially our wetlands with its wonderful warm and amazing songs of birds.
