![]() ![]() We are neither left nor right: we are in front A green slogan The word green is widely used in environmental sectors as Green thinking, green revolution, green words, green voice etc. These all are related to a healthy environment, its conservation and maintenance. As our planet is also called as green planet, yet the only known planet carrying life, thus the word green represents life. All phenomena which are responsible for keeping our planet alive or those natural phenomena regulated in our body which keeps us alive i.e. heart beating, breathing, blood circulation etc. are represented by the word green. Thus the word represents the invisible and divine linkage of the living heart with the nature. Nature itself is governed by certain rules and regulations. Nature itself is chained (tied) by a set of rules. For instance , in the hydrological cycle , a set of series of different stages which ultimately results in precipitation is established. Disturbance in any stage may cause vast changes in the whole ecosystem. Similarly, Photosynthesis, photorespiration, pedogenesis etc. are also tied to certain rules in the form of a series of events., As politics is the act of making rules and the way by which the rules thus made are implemented in ground level. Though the words green and politics sound greatly different, these both are linked in this article .These are like two eyes of the binocular which appears to be different but gives single view when looked through the binocular . INTRODUCTION The concept of green politics is the Fusion product formed after the excellent synthesis and analysis of both nature (environmental aspect) and politics which may be the safe passage to enter into the next century. Different authors have described green politics differently but keeping the key idea same. Green politics is the political ideology based on healthy environmentalism seeking the development of sustainable tomorrow. In other word, political ideology that aims to create an eco –friendly and sustainable society rooted in environmentalism, social liberalism and grass root democracy. In short it will be better to say green politics aims harmonious relation between human society and environment. It advocates for social progressivism by sharing many ideas related to ecology, conservation, environmentalism including democracy, social justice, feminism, non violence seeking to to create harmony between the human existence and the nature through consensus based decision making. Adherents of green politics called as green don?t simply confine themselves to the political boundary but shows worldwide view. As the concept of green politics is based on environmentalism and its root can be traced back to enlightenment thinkers of eastern Hindus ancestors like Rishis, Munies etc who used to search divinity in the nature .The kings also used to go forest to meditate after completing their reign which was called as Banaprastha. The persons involving in the clearing of religious forest were punished heavily. The social structure was based on the moral stance that parents should take the foresight of his coming 7 generations i.e. to hand over a healthy environment to the children was considered as the responsibility of the parents. This is a type of sustainable thinking and their action were motivated by these feelings . In this way people used to balance both natural and social life. In the modern era, organized and advance environmentalism was started in the late 19th century in Europe and US as the reaction of rapid and unbridled industrialization and economic growth. Knowing the increased pressure on natural resources leading to rapid deforestation and land degradation which was done in the name of urbanization, economic growth through industrialization , green parties in more advanced form was established. 1892 AD was the date when Green politics was started in the form of conservation movement such as sierra club founded in san fransisco. Due to the influences of these movements green parties arose with new and modernized philosophy synthesizing their aims and !==!==!--object--====ives. GREEN PARTIES Green parties and green politics are complementary to each other because green parties are the main actor of green politics. Green parties are formally organized political bodies based on the principles of green politics which includes ecology (environmentalism), social justice, grass root democracy and nonviolence. These four principles are called as the four pillars of green parties . Also, balance of these four components creates the balance in both social and natural lives. But in 2001, the Global green was organized and the Global green charter added further two i.e. sustainability and respect for diversity and expanded the principles from four to six. The united Tasmania group was the first political party established on the basis of environmentalism which was founded in March 1972 in Australia against the rapid deforestation and environmental degradation and resulted in the construction of a dam in lake padre (once a natural lake located in southwest of Tasmania, Australia).During the time of establishment it got only 3% votes on state election but inspired the creation of green parties all over the world. In May 1972 meeting at Victoria university of Wallington , New Zealand launched the ? Value party? which was the world?s first countrywide green party to engage in competition for parliamentary seat nationally. After a year, UK?s ?ecology party? came into existence. But the ? German green party? which won 27 seats in the Bundestag (lower house of parliament ) in federal elections, identified 4 pillars of green parties and coined the term ?green? in the context of politics both of which are widely accepted in the ideology of green politics. The German green party had adopted sunflower as the symbol in elections and after when the sun flower was started to recognize as the worldwide symbol of green parties.
GREEN PARTIES AND POLITICS IN THE CONTEXT OF NEPAL A political party with the name of ?Hariyali Nepal party? was established in 1997 AD with the co-ordination of people who were previously associated with communist and democratic groups. It was also recognized by both Global Green and Asia pacific green network .Its founder president was Kuber Sharma who was honored as culture, tourism and civil aviation minister by ex king Gyandra Shah in 2002 AD . This party got 6638 votes in the legislative election of 1999 but got no any seat. Its election symbol was mango with two leaves. As it appeared as a royalist political party in ambiguous political situation. Its effectiveness and the presence was not seen by Nepalese citizens. The direct involvement of this party in formal politics supporting monarchism at the time during when people were fighting to root out monarchism became the weakness and it kept the vision and effectiveness of green under the strong shadow. In other word though heaving good principles and provisions green politics was wrongly exercised by this party. The population of our country is expanding at an alarming rate , increasing the pressure on natural resources. 78.2% of total population directly depends on forest for fuel wood. Nepal is an agricultural country, 40% of National GDP is shared by agriculture and 10% by forestry. Forestry is complementary to agriculture as it is said that 1 ha of uncultivated agricultural land requires 3 ha of forest cover. Obviously, Without proper management and mobilization of natural resources in agriculture and forestry , least developed countries (LDCs) can?t step toward the development. While talking about proper management and improvement of natural resources we have to consider the fundamental dependency of rural people on natural resources. So these two must be balanced for the sustainable future. Without considering the need of local people, resources can?t be managed. At this point , provision of green politics acts firmly. Fair and equitable distribution of natural resources, the right of local people on local resources are highly trumpeted, democratic issues arose in the field of resource management must be addressed. So green politics in the form, which suits Nepalese climate with newness must be introduced and embraced. |
