Earth Hour

by | 05-04-2013 05:06

On March 29th, 2013 I celebrated World Earth Hour at 8:30pm. This was a very impressive environmental cause which got be thinking about its origin.

It's an event held by WWF (World Wide Fund for nature) and the main aim it started of was to encourage business's and industries in Sydney in 2007 to turn off the lights they dont use in order to increase awareness on climate change.

In 2008, other countries adopted this and made it an annual event. It was held in 371 cities and towns, 35 countries and between 50-100 million participants.

Over the years, it has become an international event and been practiced by all, from young environmentalists to heads of states. Earth Hour 2012 went to extremes to protect the planet, with astronaut Andre Kuipers observing the lights off event from the International Space Station.

It launched a campaign which had a you tube video which i previewed to delegates at the UN in kenya and also to students in my school. This is very inspirational. The campaign is called "I will if You will"

Activities i did
~Switch of the lights at 8:30 pm and use candles
~Convinced the entire neighborhood to engage similarly
~Show students the campaign
~Give a small talk on it and it's importance

These are the small things i did in my own way. Afterall, even the smallest actions count!

I was quite happy to be part of a global action and made me think, that we can start a similar thing at TUNZA Eco-generation and eventually make it spread out!! E.g Save a drop day- where everyone is given a challenge of cutting down their water usage by half.

Just a thought!
