The waste management in Kigali City like other urban centers in developing country is still a challenging phenomenon even if Kigali is used to be a cleaned city. Kigali city is the Capital of Rwanda, started in 1907 as a colonial outpost initially supposed to inhabit by at least three hundred people. Currently, Kigali city is inhabited by 870,127 people according to 2006 population projections and over one million during the day.  The government has established different strategies to overcome challenges of waste management in Kigali city such as putting boxes on streets, roads in the town, and a home waste management system, etc.

In collaboration with different companies the government has established the methods of taking wastes at homes once per week and owners of those wastes have to pay some money for each sac of domestic wastes. Homes, restaurants and even on streets wastes are put together in appropriate boxes and sacs in order to be taken to the waste land. It is forbidden to put wastes anywhere in streets, roads, and to wash one or double hands on streets. Toilets have been put at each corner of Kigali city. Once you get taken doing these you get a deserve punishment.

The car brings those wastes at a waste land in a rural site of Kigali city. Before we had a waste land at Nyanza in Kicukiro district in Kigali city. As the population of Kigali city grows quickly and the city expand, the waste land of Nyanza has been found in the center of the town this was harmful to the nearby population. So it has been removed at another place far to the town.

At that place wastes are classed in different categories in order to be recycled. There are different companies who recycle organic waste into fertilizer, charcoal, plastics into useful plastic materials and glasses are not yet begun to be recycled.

Government and citizens of Kigali city work together to resolve the problem of waste management to keep the city cleaned and visitors coming to Kigali City use to enjoy the way Rwanda uses to manager wastes especially in Kigali city.
