Water Monitoring Project in Bangladesh

by | 26-03-2013 23:21

Foreword:

On the occasion of the World Water Day, An initiative of checking the water impurities was taken by the international NGO named iEARN under the "Our river our world" campaign. The iEARN-BD coordinator Rajib lochan Das leaded the initiative in Bangladesh. Mahsinur (me), Waraqah, Dibyo Rafid, Nehal, Rudro and Ratul were volunteers. At first we went to Basilla at the bank of the Buriganga River. The closer we went to the bank of the river the more prominent the bad odor became. Then we measured the water temperature followed by collecting the first sample. After that we went to Ashuliya at the bank of the Turag River. This time the water was stinkier. We consecutively measured water temperature and collected the second sample. Then we packed up and returned to the iEARN office to test the water.

Water Testing:

We started with sample-1 the color was grayish-green. The turbidity was 100+ JTU which is quite bad. The temperature change was 26 C, which is ordinary. But the chemical part was bittersweet. The pH level was 7 i.e. neutral which is very good for many of the aquatic life, the amount of dissolved oxygen was only 2ppm at 24.5% saturation. It indicates high level of bacteria or too much rotting of the plant. Both the phosphate and the nitrate was 0ppm. That means the water was much better than what it seemed. It is actually very good for the aquatic creatures.

Then came sample-2 the color was blackish-green. The turbidity was 200+ JTU which is quite bad. The aquatic life is quite hampered due to the factor. The temperature change was 26 C, which is ordinary. But the chemical part was also bittersweet. The pH level was 8 i.e. somewhat Basic which is good for many of the aquatic life, the amount of dissolved oxygen was only 2ppm at 24.5% saturation. So the plants and animal will have difficulties to survive. In this case the phosphate was 0ppm which is excellent. Again, the nitrate was 1ppm which is very good.
