Earth Hour Celebration 2013 At The Downtown Burj Dubai - Dubai, UAEby | 24-03-2013 05:19 |

Earth Hour is an event that was introduced in 2007 in Sydney. That day, 2.2 million people switched off their lights and other non-essential electronics. Following this, many other countries took the initiative and started up the campaign and now it has become one of the highlights of the season for environmentalists all around the world.
It was held for this year at the Downtown Burj Dubai area which was a wonderful area to start with. We reached there well before time at 7:15 pm and saw wonderful sights along our way to the Earth Hour Celebration area. There were many events that were happening at the stage of the Earth Hour Celebration area. One was an amazing LED suit dance show and African music. We also celebrated the birthday of two characters who are proponents of promoting awareness to save water and electricity, Splashy and Sparky. They are two characters created by DEWA (Dubai Electrical and Water Authority). I also volunteered at the EEG stall there with a nice sweat band, glowing wristband and also an LED UAE badge. I helped people there with the membership forms and also guided them as to where they needed to go to celebrate this wonderful occasion.
At 8:30 pm sharp local time, the police had started the hour-long march. I and some of my friends held the EEG banner and paraded all around the hour-long march (which we completed in 30 minutes!!). People tokk lots of photographs of us and we were panting at the end of the march because we literally ran the entire length with the banner in our hands. We returned to where we started from and lighted the candles there.
The candles there were placed in a formation that looked something this. We all took pictures of us with the candles. With the darkened Burj Khalifa behind, it was a memorable experience to celebrate the 2013 Earth Hour here in Dubai. At the end we all took a pledge to save all the resources in whichever way possible. |
