Rain Water Harvesting as Sustainable Source

by | 18-03-2013 14:13

Water is the most fundamental need for every living. That's why we have to ensure safe drinking water for our life. But current scarcity of water is bringing tension to us as the surface water is being polluted, ground water level is being reduced, salinity & Arsenic contamination is also increasing. Now we have to look for sustainable alternatives which will help us to drink water safely.

Considering all other factors it is seen that rain is a good source of pure drinking water. The only thing is that we have to design the system properly in a cheaper way.

There are some ways in which water harvesting can be beneficial to a community –rwh-rural

  •   efficient collection and storage of rainwater makes it accessible and substitutes for poor quality water.
  •  traditional sources are located away from the community particularly in peri-urban areas, collecting and storing water close to households, villages which makes it inconvenient.
  •  collected rainwater can be stored for direct use or can be recharged into the ground water to improve the quality of ground water supply.
  •   harvesting of rainwater is an ideal solution to water problems in areas having insufficient water resources and  effects of drought can be mitigated.
