The annual can collection campaign organised by the EEG was held on the 28th of February. Parents, children and youth from all over Sharjah gathered enthusiastically at the Raddison Blu hotel. Thanks to my brother Raunak and my friend Arushi for volunteering. A big thank you to alll the people who contributed to make this earth a cleaner and greener place. We arrived on time at the hotel at 07-15AM. Our assigned area was quite big & a lot of Banners, posters & fliers were available from EEG. Along with other volunteers , we all set up the place, placed EEG banner in the foreground, stuck up the posters and fliers all around the place so that people from main road also can easily locate the place. Put the weighing scale on a stand so that cans can be weighed properly.
I took the job of weighing the cans and announcing the weight so that others can write in & complete the registration process by noting the names & other details & issuing the slip under the guidance of our team leader and with help of Radisson staff. Afterwards Arushi & the volunteers switched our roles to gain varied experience. Soon contribution started pouring in. Schools, individuals all chipped in with generous offerings. People submitted the bags full of empty, dry & crushed cans, we noted the weight, & issued the slip of paper from EEG office notifying the KGs contributed, they also posed for photos, shared smiles with us & moved on. We kept on checking also whether the cans are not mixed with aluminum or plastic. All such material found was kept separately in other bags. We kept on storing the contributed packets securely and made sure to tie the bags properly.
Our campaign ended with collecting 216 KG of cans. Maximum contribution was from School of knowledge which was 62 KG
At 11.30 AM the pick-up van arrived, that was scheduled to take the cans for recycling. Almost all the confirmed participants arrived. We waited for the last one to come & then we collected the used gloves, removed the EEG banner carefully, also removed all the posters & fliers so that the same may be used again. All this material was handed over to our team leader and we left the place clean & tidy as it was before the event.
It was a satisfactory day & time well utilized. I look forward to more chances for offering my services again for other tasks that may be assigned to me in future. |
