Volunteering for used book fair – for Sharjah City for Humanitarian Services

by | 02-03-2013 02:22

Sharjah City for Humanitarian Services (SCHS) is a local non-profit organization founded in 1979 aiming to advance the Arab family and develop the social services it needs. I am associated with this organization through their ?Early Intervention Center? which assist disabled children in terms of education, precaution, and therapy. The first visit itself where as a part of my volunteering assignment, I helped a child of 5 years of age to do her regular but painful walking exercise (she can not walk properly because of weak bone structure), had opened my eyes and I decided to do whatever is possible from my side to be a part of their regular struggle and sufferings.

To raise funds for supporting their activities, SCHS encourage people to donate used /new books which they sell during a yearly ?used book fair? in Sharjah. This year (it is 5th. Book fair), the book fair was conducted from 26th. Feb to 1st March at Sharjah corniche and I was one of the volunteer for the event to help SCHS in their noble cause.

The responsibilities were raging from sorting out the donated books into various categories (English/arabic, academic/storybook etc etc) and then fixing the price tag into each book and then finally stacking the books in an attractive way inside the stall and then sell these to the customers.

Since the book prices was kept very nominal (most of the books are in the range from Dhs 1 to Dhs 5), it has drawn a huge crowd for these days and the event was very successful in every terms.

I felt very happy to be part of this noble cause as I always look forward to contribute towards the society in whatever small way possible for me..
