Cendrawasih-Bird of Paradise: The Most Glorious Bird of Indonesia in Exctintion

by | 04-02-2013 22:43

Cendrawasih is one of the beautiful birds who comes from Papua New Guinea and Papua-Indonesia. However, Papua New Guinea harbors a prominent species of Cendarwasih which is the Raggiana bird of paradise (Paradisaea raggiana) that is defined as the national bird of New Guinea. From the scientific name (Pasadiseae), we can guess if the another name of Cendrawasih is the bird of paradise (English). This is endemic species of both countries mentioned above. Cendrawasih also named as the bird of paradise has such very rare and beautiful feathers. The plumages have been used for mystical properties and decoration. So, many hunters have catched and killed them to grab their feathers. After that, they sold and traded illegally to black markets in others countries. A conceivable demand for hunters to fill out the high demand of market, they struggle to make paradise birds of being endangered. Yet, local tribes of Papua suppose that these paradise birds have been recognized as the endowment of the God diretcly and have been never touched by human beings. Perhaps it is a local indigeneous of Papuan tribes to preserve them from exctintion. However, they also utilize their feathers to some holy worships. To eradicate the extinction of Cendrawasih because of illegal trades of their plumages, the local government and government of Indonesia implemented national rules to alleviate those trades. In addition, the international body, IUCN, intervened this complicated issues to be soon settled. As a return, this institution succeded to evaluate the existence of paradise birds in low risk of IUCN Red List. This birds also have been enrolled in CITES Appendix II. The lessons learned from the above are: 1. We have to appreciate some institutions who have preserved the existence of endangered species of birds 2. The beauty is a boon that must be nurtured well not to exploit gradually without the properly consideration to the next time 3. As young leaders, we must be keep biodiversities true to the sustainability for our next generation because ? we have not inherited our nature, but we have borrowed it from the next generation?. Keep in mind the above messages, hopefully it could be the best trails to sustainable environment (flora-fauna). Written by: Achmad Solikhin Indonesian Greenaction Forum www.i-gaf.org
