What is GPS?
Global Power Shift (GPS) is initiated and led by 350.org, a network of youth-led and co-founded by environmentalist Bill McKibben author. This project is implemented in collaboration with a wide range of partners and allies who are part of the international climate movement and the youth climate movement.
GPS is an opportunity for more than 500 highly motivated activists from around the world, sharpen skills, build personal and community share a vision for global change and develop strategies on how to organize different actions and peaks similar in their country of origin to bring the movement to another level on the planet.
GPS will start with the international climate summit bringing together young people mostly in Istanbul between 10 and 17 June 2013. In the coming months, in country after country, national or regional summits will be held.
GPS will also be the beginning of a new effort to raise our voice against climate injustice. The event will be a catalyst for change, a unique opportunity for community action program with a powerful dynamic that focuses on sharing and the development of skills, abilities and strategy to strengthen and invigorate the global climate movement.
Why hold a world summit on climate issues?
Because the world is running out of time to mobilize the necessary political will to solve the climate crisis.
2015 clear profile as a critical year where we must act quickly and decisively if we are to have any chance of limiting global warming to below 2 ?C, and even less to return to 350 parts per million CO2 in the atmosphere scientists say necessary.
After the failure of recent major global meetings, the Earth Summit Rio + 20 is the last date, the organization 350.org has felt the need to mobilize public opinion by organizing a massive demonstration and sustained force that disrupts the status quo and capture the attention and imagination of the public.
The global climate movement needs to generate an unprecedented level of political pressure in favor of climate action.
This ambitious goal is within reach. Working in synergy with various organizations, activists and networks in virtually every country of the world, the climate movement has the potential to create such a global wave. Now it is time for us to release this potential!
