IMPACT OF FOSSIL FUELS IN THE ENVIRONMENT (OCTOBER THEMATIC REPORT)

by Esther Akanbi | 07-10-2022 17:33

Fossil fuels are hydrocarbon formed from fossilized and buried remains of dead plants and animals. The fuels are found in the Earth's crust and contain carbon and hydrogen, which can be buried for energy. The main sources of fossil fuels are petroleum, natural gas, and coal, they are used to produce heat in the home, in large power station where they're used to produce electricity and also used to power engines. According to statistics, eighty percent(80%)  of our energy comes from natural gas, oil and coal cause we depend on those fuels to heat our home, run our vehicles, power industry and manufacturing, and provides us with electricity.
Fossil fuels has its advantages but also at the same time has its disadvantages, it has impacted the world and environment  both in good and bad manner.
ADVANTAGES
1. Fossil fuels are mostly attributed to the convenience and ease of using well established energy.
2. It can be found easily.
3. They can generate a large amount of electricity at a single location.
DISADVANTAGES
1. Fossil fuels are non- renewable, it reserves are not replenished naturally and easily
2. It pollutes the environment when burned for energy.
3. It's unsustainable, we are using too many fossil fuels too quickly.
4. It has led to extreme accidents over the years, including pipeline leaks, exploding drilling platforms, and the dumping of millions of gallons of oil in the Ocean, which poses greater threat to Biodiversity as a whole ( my country Nigeria use to experience these accidents alot).
To be sincere , fossil fuels will continue to pollute the planet as long as they are in use, but can we really do without them cause it has been meeting the world's energy demands for many years, so let's note that although fossil fuels are easy to fall back on, they are major contributors to global climate change and huge form of pollution.
Countries all over the world are transitioning away from fossil fuels by introducing other reliable sources like hydropower, wind, solar energy and geothermal, but it will take a long period of time before fossil fuels can run out, in most countries including Nigeria, people are installing solar panels, and it will soon outshine fossil fuels because of its low negative impact on human's health, zero green house gases(GHG) emission, and ability to take advantage of natural processes, like the shining sun to generate power.
But in the meantime, how do we use fossil fuels in the most sufficient and environmentally responsible ways possible? This is a big question for every entities aiming for a greater and sustainable planet to keep in mind.
