Starting from our problem section and completion of action has been given below with question and answers for better under standing.
List the situations/problems in your school/community that bothered you:
1. THE MISUSES OF ELECTRICAL APPLIANCES and power by the students, staffs and teachers of our school. 2. Throwing wrapper here and there. 3. Water tap not closed after use in few occasions. 4. Writing on wall by students and wall making dirty. 5. Falling of students on ground due to unevenness.
From the above listed 5 nos. problems, the misuse of electrical power problem was the most serious issue to us, all the students of the school is being affected directly and the society indirectly. Due to consumption of excessive electricity, faced the power cut many times and classes were off.
Misuses electricity resulted increase of electrical power consumption and increase of green house gas generation. The School committee and our principal had requested to the students multiple times. No improvement in the discipline was noticed to stop misuse of electricity in last few months.
Who was affected by the situation/problem and what did they say?
From the above misuse problem, we all the students of the school are being affected directly and our societies are being affected indirectly.
Misuses electricity resulted increase of electrical power consumption and increase of green house gas generation. Excessive consumption was resulted in shortage of power and in many occasions our classes remained closed. Excessive power consumption resulted increase of monthly school fees and other expenditure.
The School committee and our principal had requested to the students multiple times. No recordable improvement was noticed in terms of power consumption / misuse in last few months.
State the problem you chose and why did you CHOOSE it?
We had chosen the problem of "MISUSES OF ELECTRICAL APPLIANCES and power by the students, staffs and teachers of our school".
Among the above top 5 problems observed by our team, we had discussed each problem in our group meeting, reviewed their seriousness, recorded number of occurrence of each problem and discussed work can be done by us ( student of class – IV & V ) etc. After discussion we had selected the above misuse of electricity problem as the most serious problem based on voting among our team, which can be seen in the attached presentation. Taken concurrence of our principal before starting of our action.
List the different solutions you came up with and which one did you choose to implement and why?
Initially, we had not much idea about electricity and how to resolve such misuse problem. But we had desired to change the situation. So discussed the issue with teachers in details, tried to analysis the different situations of the misuses observed by us and we got the cause behind them. Discussed at home with our elders. Then brain stormed to get solutions from each member. Total 15 solutions were collected and we focused the solutions which can be acted / done / close by us, with out any external support / investment.
We face different opinions on same issue and resolved it by voting. We have closed the following planned action. 2. Putting sticker in each class on switch board for give reminder all the times - closed after colour printing and pasting of such sticker. 6. Made guide lines what to be done and what to be avoided. 7. Requested to all 2000 students of school in morning assembly to follow guide lines to increase awareness among all. 8. Put suggestion box to collect suggestion from students. Closed, 9. Announced rewarding system to bring issue of misuse. Started rewarding. 10. Reduced number of lights , wherever is not required. Closed 11. Arranged training for night guards and my team by external agency. Closed 12. Made details study and made action plan for change of old electrical appliances like 80 W fan, Old fan regulators, tub lights by 50 W fans, CFL lights, 5T lights etc. By these way 100% planned action has been closed by our team which done with out any investment. Which reflected reduction of our electrical bill of Aug'12 during 10th. Aug'12 to 9th. sep'12 with respect to last year bill of the same period.
The following actions required support of principal where investment is required. We have given details and expecting further improvement in near future. 4. Around rupees 6 lacs required to change old fan & lights to reduce electrical bills by 40%.
This is our story of CHANGE! (write in brief your act of DO)
Yes, this is truly our story to change the situation in our school. Our action plan was demonstrated in every classes. Now students have started taking action for save energy in school and also in their home. For the above 12 actions , starting from planning, arranging materials, gathering knowledge, involving teachers and students etc. had done by us only. We brought extra food to stay extra time after school hours. Principal had given permission us ( student of class IV & V ) to audit class of senior students ( up to class XII ) and act accordingly.
The team members were never thought to get involve for such change story beside our regular study. To make us project, we were forced to learn many things like electricity, poster making, speaking publicly, energy auditing, video recording etc. Most of the video recording was done by us with help of one small digital camera and taken external help for editing. Total recording was of 15 min. with details of our work done . Now our school authority is planning to share our video with all students of our school to involve all of us for initiating such change story at school, at society and at our nation too. Already we were invited by 2 schools of our locality to demonstrate the our team work/ video and guide them accordingly for such energy saving project. The CEE , Ahmedabad had appreciated our action and achieving result in short time.
