   Science Camp is a long holiday academic program for senior high school in Jakarta to engage in science and technology in our community. Last July I joint the science camp to Thousand Island where I learned a broad range of environmental issues concerning water, especially about ocean and the beach. Also I had the opportunity to do snorkeling. It was a pity to know that some of the corals and underwater environment were destroyed due to the irresponsible act of human (i.e., bombing). We learned about how to save tortoises, mangroves, seashells, etc., and the most memorable for me was when we discussed how to save our water. When I turned on the water-tap to take a bath everyday at home actually I rarely think twice about saving the water. It's easy to think that water is abundant and everlasting because the ease in which it flows from the taps. Until recently, when I read in The Jakarta Post, reporting about a community in Mekarjaya hamlet, Bogor, West Java, line up for drinking water. For me this was a very special report because Bogor known as :"Rain City" for its high rainfalls, yet much of Bogor has experienced water shortage over the past six month. So, this really reminded me of the experience in the thousand Island. when I had to use a bucket to fill up the water into the tap before flushing it to wash my feet. This was one of creative ways to save water, because it kept the water from running excessively. It's really opening my eyes to the enormity of it. When I think about the issue of water, I tend to focus on the little things that a family can do to conserve water in the home things like turning off the tap when you brush your teeth, using a rain barrel to capture rain water for your garden, investing in a low-flow toilet or taking a shorter shower. Well, that's one of many simple valuable things that I want to share as an Eco-Generation Ambassador, on how easy actually we can play our role to contribute our little share to save water for our future. |
