Project- Growing Garden from Garbage

by | 04-08-2012 02:54

Our project  - Growing Garden from garbage  is found  applicable in multi-storied building and this was presented in many societies here as a solution for waste management in Ghorabandha , Jamshedpur.

Our aim -  Let us grow our own garden in balcony of Multi story Building from waste
Steps to be followed
1.Collect 200 lt. capacity  drum and place it in a sunny place of balcony.
2.Put small hole ( around 20 mm dia) in 10/12 location in Cylindrical wall at diff. height and angle as shown here in the sketch.
3.Put fiber of sugar cane / news paper in it at bottom around 2 Inches height.
4.Start adding  kitchen waste such as fruit and vegetable peelings, crushed egg shells and even used paper towels, (but not fats, meat scraps or dairy products). Now, just wait. From the floor and then up the heap, the whole thing will start to compost and decompose. As the ingredients rot, the microorganisms and worms will migrate upwards in the direction of new food, and compost will carry on forming from the bottom up.
Do Not put any plastic and other non decomposable items.
5.After filling of  waste in the drum till 4/ 5 inches and put one layer of soil for 1 inch .
6.Keep on adding waste and soil till filling of the drum . It will take 5 years to fill such drum for a family of 4 members .
7.With the increase of height of the compost, small  plant of vegetable , flowers etc place in the hole and allow plant to grow. The attached photo was taken from  one  garden.
8.By this way small garden can be made in  each balcony of multi-storied building  and daily waste can be disposed off with out throwing in the road.
