[September Thematic Report] <Extreme Weather in Kazakhstan>

by Altynay Yelgundinova | 29-09-2022 01:57

The climate in Kazakhstan is extremely continental, with annual fluctuations in temperature and hot summers and cold winters. The temperature in the winter months reaches -40¡ÆC in the north of the country and 38¡ÆC during the summer. Lately, due to the climate change there are longer summers with a heat wave and shorter but warmer winters. For example, this year summer lasted a month longer and the weather changed over a night. Extremely high change in the temperatures caused some natural disasters like floods and droughts.

An increase in temperatures in mountain areas, like Almaty, the South Kazakhstan, and East Kazakhstan regions, caused an increase in water level in rivers that lead to floods and mudflows. Especially, the highest flood risks are taking place in springs when the snow starts to melt. On the other hand, with a decrease in precipitation, people in Kazakhstan often face livestock death cause of the increase in temperature which lead to the droughts during the summer. As World Banks states, according to the data gathered in 2021, The number of hot days may increase by up to 16 days for the period 2040 – 2059 under the RCP 8.5 pathway

My family experienced both hazards and it do not get easier every year; the government tries to regulate these issues, but it is hard to fight the climate change.
