[September Thematic Report] Extreme Weather in Southern California

by Jayden Kim | 25-09-2022 02:35

September in Southern California was the hottest it has ever been years. From the 7th to the 17th, temperatures in Los Angeles averaged over 97 Fahrenheit, or 36 degrees Celsius, and the hottest temperature was 103 degrees Fahrenheit, or 40 degrees Celsius. In Orange county, where I live, averaged 38 degrees Celsius, and all sports was cancelled and was enforced by the city. Orange county suffered from 5 wildfires in the month of September, one burning 4500 acres of land.

Los Angeles specifically, has lost 5208 acres in the 2 weeks range of the high temperatures.  Mountain fires due to the high temperatures has burned 8896 acres and is barely contained. Los Angeles furthermore have received multiple heat related illnesses in hospitals in the month September.

The high temperature also has led California's power grid to go almost overboard, requires thousands of extra megawatts to maintain its function. The State did declare a level 3 power emergency due to the high demands of megawatts needed.

My house lost power 4 times this month of September. 2 of those were from the 2 week of high temperatures. High temperatures has become a huge problem for California in 2022, losing 360,000 acres of land due to wildfires from high temperatures and humidity.

Climate change is a huge part of the high temperatures in California. These sudden changes in temperature. Sacramento, the capital of California, reached 116 degrees Fahrenheit, or 46 Celsius. Scientists estimate that climate change has caused this high temperature, and without the effects the temperature would have dropped to 114 degrees Fahrenheit, or 45 degrees Celsius.

Personally, this temperature increase was detrimental. As a soccer player, and playing in the blazing temperatures, many of my teammates and those I go against have suffered from heat strokes heavily. Many sports players have also noticed to increase in heat strokes during games.
