[September Free Report] Extreme weather in Lesotho

by Rethabile Makatla | 27-09-2022 15:38

In Lesotho, heavy rainfall is something very common, specifically in the highlands. Often, a significant amount of precipitation occurs in only a few hours, but it does not lead to severe flooding and landslide risk.
Lesotho is a very mountainous country. These mountains tend to modify and amplify precipitation, and in turn, often causes the frequent heavy rainfall and snow experienced.  Lesotho lies at an average elevation of 2161 m above sea level and it is therefore one of the highest countries in the world (WorldData.info, 2022). With this being said, more rainfall is received in the rural areas more than in the lowlands.
This year, something different is happening. Extremely heavy rainfalls are experienced in the lowlands too. Nowadays rainfalls do not occur in only a few hours but it rains for some days, non-stop. These rainfall patterns are visible both in the highlands and lowlands. Just last month it snowed heavily in the highlands and that made it to be extremely cold I'm the lowlands.
This month, it rained heavily in both the highlands and the lowlands and the resulting effects of that rain is that infrastructure and people's buildings, particularly living houses, were destroyed.
