A Thirsty City

by | 29-02-2012 11:58

Did anyone see in the newspapers yesterday that the grounds in Beijing are about to collapse? It is reported that this problem is due to excessive digging of groundwater. In response to this, Beijing, "the thirstiest city in China," started to artificially pump water INTO the ground to prevent further collapses.

In this process, rainwater and waste water will be used, and a protection zone against groundwater pollution will be created.

Beijing's usage of groundwater is very high, almost 65 percent of the entire water consumption.
However, he global standard for using groundwater is less than 40 percent.

The groundwater level in Beijing has been lowered from 12m in 1999 to 24m in 2010. And this is especially serious in large urban areas and economic hubs.

If the process of ground collapsing continues, not only the environment, but also human lives will suffer.

Beijing is the thirstiest city in China, and as population grows, the lack of water is becoming more and more severe.
