Desertification in Chinese plainsby | 27-02-2012 22:01 |

For many years, desertification and lack of water has been the primary problem for many Chinese people, especially people living in Northern areas. Mongolia(also called Neimenggu province)?s vast plains absorb enormous amounts of carbon dioxide. But the majority of this area has been converted into agricultural cites to produce food for a fast growing population. Reckless agriculture resulted in destroyed local water supplies, and increased the number sandstorms and ?yellow dust? . The famous ?White Lake? in Neimenggu is especially in danger because it is actually being ?dried up? by the process of desertification. This lake consists of two lakes(The west lake and the east lake), and the West lake (which is made of saltwater and is equivalent to the size of Korea?s Bucheon city) has become completely dry. The freshwater East lake is getting smaller every year. As the lake went dry, it left salt content minerals in its bottom, and sometimes strong winds blow away these minerals to as far away as Korea and Japan. They do serious health damages such as asthma and diseases on the heart and blood vessles. They are also a source of damage to airline businesses and electronic industries. Many NGOs from many countries are trying to help out this problem, but it would not be a great help unless the Chinese leaders are fully alert of its severity^^ |
