There's This Magical Road

That Can Pull Pollution Out of the Air

We?re not kidding. There really is a road in the Netherlands made of a material that scientists have shown can suck a certain kind of pollutant out of the air.

The pollutant is nitrogen oxide, a key ingredient in the smog and acid rain we all hate.

Last year scientists from a Dutch university re¢¯orted that a small section of road that they had paved with concrete containing titanium dioxide did a great job removing the nitrogen oxide that cars spew out.

?The air-purifying properties of the new paving stones had already been shown in the laboratory, but these results now show that they also work outdoors,? Edmunds AutoObserver.com quoted one of the researchers as saying.

Maybe the best thing about all this is that this special road material works its magic with just the aid of sunlight. And then, when it rains, the former¢¯y dangerous pollutant washes harmlessly away!
