  Here in the Philippines, fireworks is how we welcome the new year. This year we got to watch the biggest fireworks display in the Philippines held in the City of Makati. It was awesome!!! The display went on for about 20 minutes and must have cost a lot of money. But in the morning it was sad to see all the smog in the air. The air was grey and there was a strong smell of gunpowder. I began to think of how bad all those fireworks might be for the environment. But here where we live in the City of San Pablo, two friends decided to hold a lantern festival . For just P150.00 or US$3.00 you get a paper lantern that has a small candle at the bottom. When you light the candle, the heat makes the paper lantern fly up in the air. They had about 3,000 people light up those lanterns so it was a beautiful thing to look up in the sky. Then I thought about what would happen to those paper lanterns. Maybe they would just fall right back down from the sky. It would mean someone would have to clean it up. But I think that is better than all those fireworks.
