Solution for Maldives?

by | 29-08-2011 00:50

Hello guys.

This is my second time of having to write this, because I lost all that I carefully wrote a few seconds ago when the "backspace key" made the site go back a page.

Ah...well let's start again

So the Republic of Maldives is one of those small island states that are most vulnerable to raising sea levels. It has announced a plan to go carbon neutral by 2030, but what will become of the people when before then, the island becomes uninhabitable?

There have been several solutions proposed.

One is to to simply obtain land from other states. However, that is almost impossible since no country will likely give up its land willingly.

There's also the option of building artificial islands, but the financial, engineering, cultural and legal hindrances will probably be too much.

Also, it could form a merger with another country and to form some sort of federation. However, that would damage cultural identities and also a relinquish of control over its assets.

It seems, the best solution might be for the UN to affirm that " if an island nation loses its permanent population and territory to rising seawater, the world will continue to recognize its sovereignty as a nation. "

That way, the Maldivian government will remain entact and still be able to represent the rights of its citizens no matter how dispersed they are.

However, let's all hope that it doesn't get to the point where the people have to leave their homes!

(This version is a lot shorter than the one that I wrote but got erased, but I can't remember all that I wrote and this way it's more concise so easier to take in^^)
