Eco Villians(Part 1)

by | 29-08-2011 00:01

At the same time there are people who make every day efforts to fight environmental crimes, there are those who perpetrate them.

I've made a list of some of the most recent notorious industries which have unconscientiously turned a profit at the expense of the environment and its occupants.

AngloGold Ashanti

- South African mining company

- Promised to correct environmental and human rights damage in 2004 but instead, caused more harm

-Eco-Crimes:

-> contaminates land and people with its gold mining in

       Ghana.

-> the ground is dug up and mixed with cyanide and the

highy-toxic mining waste seeps into rivers and wells

-> Land can no longer be farmed

-Received worst possible rating for social and environmental

protection from the  Ghanaian Environmental Protection Agency

  last year

- In 2010, two full reservoirs of mine waste leaked into rivers of

vital importance to several village communities

- Destroyed over 50 rivers in Ghana that are indispensable for

   the residents.

-> end up contaminating entire food chain.

-> many communities must be provided with expensive bottled

water. Often the people are left with no alternative but to drink

        contaminated well water.

- Human rights absues

-> Repeated cases of torture, hasty use of firearms, and

      attacks by guard dogs reported

-Systematically ignores legal regulations and directives
