Eco Villians(Part 5)

At the same time people are making an every day effort to fight environmental crimes, there are those who perpetrate them.

I've made a list of some of the most recent notorious industries which have unconscientiously turned a profit at the expense of the environment its occupants.

PHILIP MORRIS INTERNATIONAL

- U.S. tobacco company

- Strategically-located headquarters in Switzerland

-> possible reasons for relocation: tax advantages, corporate-

friendly Swiss law, and the (then) already existing investment

protection agreement between Uruguay and Switzerland, on

which the complaint against Uruguay is based

-Filed a complaint with a World Bank arbitration body against

Uruguay because of its anti-smoking laws

->recent law requiring warning labels on cigarette packets in

Uruguay to cover 80% of the packaging.

->pressured the small South American country to modify its

health policy to the wishes of the cigarette industry.

-Because PMI?s former principal (Northern) markets continue to

shrink due to stricter smoking laws, PMI  develop their new

  markets all the more aggressively.

"It is essentially a matter of

the disgraceful primacy of the economic freedom of

transnational tobacco companies over the public health policy

  of sovereign states."

"Philip Morris places profits above the health consequences of tobacco use and tries to circumvent the democratic decisions of the respective countries. This is very similar to the approach used on another level in the defense industry."

*While this is technically not environment-related, PMI is such a good example of what a company SHOULDN'T do--place economic gain before human life--, that I decided to put them in as well.
