Paper towels and Hand dryers = MAJOR THREAT

by | 23-08-2011 19:55

Using paper towels or hand dryers to dry off your hand is convenient. Yet, not very eco-friendly.

In Korea, one person uses about 17 rolls of 35m paper towels a year. Think of all the garbage that can accumulate to.

The average amount of energy consumed from one person using a electric hand dryer is 1.85kWh. A hundred thousand people could generate 360 tons of CO2 just from using hand dryers for a single month.

To offset 1 ton of CO2 gas, 360 trees have to planted.

In order to offset all the energy consumed from a hand dryer used by a hundred thousand people for a single year,

more than 1.5 million trees have to be planted.

So what are we going to do....

why, we could switch over to using handkerchiefs to dry off our hands!

Besides, in 2004, 50% of Korea's paper towels were revealed to contain carcinogenic substances, which means if your skin were to be exposed to it for a long time then you could get skin cancer and all sorts of skin diseases.

The main constituents of paper towels are paper pulp and recycled paper. To save money, companies use less pulp and more recycled paper, but too much recycled paper can decrease the quality of paper towels. Therefore, they put in all this chemical junk like bleaching agents to make up for the lowered quality. We should all make sure to not use it to wipe our mouths. Plus, bleaching agents contaminate the water A LOT so less consumption of paper towels mean less water pollutiont too.

So to help our forests, energy, air, water, and OUR HEALTH

let's all cut back on disposables!
